Medicare Advantage Eligibility

Although eligibility requirements vary by location, Medicare Advantage programs do not. We examine Medicare Advantage eligibility in this post and provide you with all the information you need to choose the best type of insurance.

For whom is Medicare Advantage Eligible?

If you have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you may enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. Even people under 65 who are receiving Medicare benefits due to a disability are eligible to enroll. If you live in the service region for your chosen plan, you are eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage policy.

You must pay both your Medicare Part B payment and the monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage plan you choose when you sign up for it.

Beneficiaries who are low-income or Medicaid-eligible may be eligible for additional assistance with the cost of their premiums, deductibles, and copayments. Your annual income determines whether you qualify for additional help, and this might alter at any time.

The Medicare Advantage program may also be available to people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). When patients with ESRD sign up for Medicare, coverage typically begins after the fourth month of hemodialysis. However, coverage may start in some cases during the first month of dialysis:

  • If the patient intends to complete home dialysis training and perform self-dialysis at home
  • ESRD Early-starting patients (before the third month of their dialysis treatment) who begin home dialysis training
  • Patients who take part in a training session for home dialysis

If you have Medicare due to ESRD, your Medicare coverage can stop under two conditions:

  • 12 months after the month your dialysis treatments end
  • 36 months after receiving a kidney transplant.

Special Needs Plans are also available for those with chronic issues. Depending on where you live, a Special Needs Plan may or may not be available.
